PinCodes Pincode India PinCodes Pincodes India Pincode The India Post uses Postal Index Number (PIN) or Pin code in its post office numbering. This Pin Code is six digits long. The current system of Pin codes was introduced for the first time on August 15, 1972. This system of PIN was brought-in to make the manual sorting and delivery system of mail simple as it helps in removing confusion over incorrect addresses, similar names of places and use of several languages by people. There are eight regional PIN zones and one functional PIN zone (for the Indian Army) in India, making it a total of nine PIN zones. The first digit of the PIN code indicates the zone (region), the second indicates the sub-region, while the third digit indicates the sorting district within the region, and the final three digits refer to the delivery Post Office.
The following are the 9 PIN zones that cover the Indian states and union territories:
1 – Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Chandigarh (Northern Region)
2 – Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand (Northern Region)
3 – Rajasthan, Gujarat, Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli (Western Region)
4 – Goa, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh (Western Region)
5 – Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana (Southern Region)
