Moving to a new home in India means updating your address across multiple institutions — and India Post is often on that list. Whether you have a Post Office Savings Account, PPF account, NSC certificates, Postal Life Insurance policy, or simply need your regular mail and parcels redirected to your new address, India Post provides clear processes for each. This guide walks you through every scenario.

1. Changing Address in Post Office Savings Account (POSA)

To update your address in your Post Office Savings Account:

  1. Visit your home post office — the post office where your account was opened (or the one currently managing it)
  2. Fill out the Address Change Request form (Form SB-10(b) or a simple written application — ask at the counter)
  3. Submit KYC proof of new address (any one):
    • Aadhaar card with new address (if already updated in Aadhaar)
    • Electricity/water/gas bill at the new address (not older than 3 months)
    • Registered rental/lease agreement
    • Bank passbook/statement with new address
  4. Passbook update: After verification, your new address is updated in the account records. A new passbook page may be issued if the old passbook has the address printed on it.

If moving to a different city: You may need to transfer your POSA to a post office near your new address. Request a Transfer of Account form at the counter. The account is transferred to the new post office (this takes about 15–30 days).

2. Changing Address for PPF Account

Post Office PPF accounts can have address updates done at the home post office:

  1. Visit the post office with your PPF passbook
  2. Submit a written application for address change along with new address proof
  3. The change is updated in the CBS (Core Banking System) within 2–3 working days

If you have moved cities and your PPF is at a distant post office, you can request a PPF Account Transfer to a post office near your new address. Submit Form PPF-12 at your current (old) post office or at the new post office of your choice.

3. Changing Address for NSC / KVP Certificates

NSC (National Savings Certificate) and KVP (Kisan Vikas Patra) are paper certificates — address change requests are simpler since they don't involve ongoing transactions:

  • Write a letter to the postmaster of the issuing post office requesting the address update on the certificate record
  • Attach new address proof
  • The issuing post office updates its records — the change is noted in the system for maturity payment purposes

4. Changing Address for Postal Life Insurance (PLI)

To update your address on your PLI or RPLI policy:

  1. Download and fill the "Address Change Request" form from pli.indiapost.gov.in or obtain it at any HO/SO
  2. Attach self-attested copies of new address proof
  3. Submit at your servicing post office (where your policy is registered)
  4. The divisional office will update records and issue a new policy page/endorsement if required

Alternatively, if you have registered for PLI online access, you can update your contact address through the DOP Internet Banking portal under Profile Settings.

5. Mail Redirection Service (For Regular Post and Parcels)

If you have moved and want to ensure letters, Speed Post, and registered articles sent to your old address are redirected to your new address, India Post offers a Mail Redirection Service.

How Mail Redirection Works

  • India Post will redirect all mail articles addressed to your old address to your new address for a specified period
  • The redirection is activated at the delivery post office of your old address
  • A small fee is charged for the service (ask at the post office counter for current fees)
  • Redirection periods available: 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, or 1 year

How to Apply for Mail Redirection

  1. Visit the post office that serves your old address (you can find it by looking up your old PIN code at PincodesInfo.in)
  2. Fill out the Mail Redirection application form (available at the counter)
  3. Provide: your old complete address, new complete address (with new PIN code), and the period of redirection required
  4. Pay the redirection fee
  5. Redirection begins within 2–3 working days of application

6. Address Change on Passport via India Post POPSK

If your passport shows your old address and you have moved, you can apply for a passport re-issue (address change) at any India Post POPSK or regional PSK:

  1. Register at passportindia.gov.in and select "Re-issue due to address change"
  2. Book an appointment at your nearest POPSK
  3. Carry original passport and new address proof (Aadhaar with updated address)
  4. Fee: ₹1,500 for re-issue (standard); new passport valid for 10 years from issue date

Documents Required for Address Change (Across All Accounts)

Document Notes
Aadhaar Card (updated)Most preferred — update Aadhaar first for a universal proof
Electricity / Gas / Water billMust not be older than 3 months
Registered rent/lease agreementMust be registered (notarised may not be accepted)
Bank passbook / statementShowing new address, not older than 3 months
Voter ID (updated)If updated with new constituency address

Pro Tip: Update Aadhaar First

The fastest way to update your address across all India Post accounts and most other institutions is to update your Aadhaar address first. You can update Aadhaar online at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in with a valid address proof. Once Aadhaar shows the new address, it serves as valid proof for post office accounts, PLI, bank KYC, and most government services — saving multiple trips with different documents.

Summary

For POSA, PPF, and NSC: visit the home post office with new address proof and a written request. For PLI: download the form and submit at your servicing office. For mail redirection: apply at the delivery post office of your old address and pay the redirection fee. Update Aadhaar first to make subsequent address changes simpler across all services.
