KYC is the paperwork nobody thinks about until an account is frozen or tax is deducted at an unexpectedly high rate. Both are avoidable. This guide covers what India Post needs, when it needs it again, and how to keep your record current.

When you will be asked to update KYC

  • Periodic re-verification — records are refreshed on a cycle, with higher-risk profiles refreshed more often.
  • Change of address — see changing your address.
  • Change of name after marriage or by deed.
  • Change of mobile number, which matters because alerts and OTPs go there.
  • Adding PAN to an account opened before you had one.
  • Large or unusual transactions, which can trigger a request for current KYC.

Documents generally accepted

DocumentIdentityAddress
AadhaarYesYes, if the address is current
PassportYesYes
Voter IDYesYes
Driving licenceYesYes, if the address is current
PANYesNo — carries no address
NREGA job cardYesYes

Take originals for verification plus self-attested photocopies. An officially valid document that shows your current address can often satisfy both requirements at once, which is why an updated Aadhaar is the path of least resistance for most people.

⚠️ Check the current figure: The exact list of officially valid documents, and how often re-verification is required for your account type, are set by India Post and the applicable KYC regulations, which change periodically. Confirm the current requirement at your post office or on indiapost.gov.in.

How to update, step by step

  1. Go to the post office holding the account, with the passbook.
  2. Ask for the KYC update form and state which detail is changing.
  3. Submit originals with self-attested copies. Originals are returned after verification.
  4. Update your mobile number at the same time if it has changed. This is the step most often skipped, and it is the one that stops alerts reaching you.
  5. Get an acknowledgement and ask when the record will reflect the change.
  6. Verify afterwards — check the passbook or ask at the counter on your next visit rather than assuming it went through.

The PAN trap worth knowing about

If your PAN is missing or wrong in the post office record, two things follow. Tax may be deducted at the higher rate that applies when PAN is not furnished, and any Form 15G or 15H you file is treated as invalid — so the declaration you filed to prevent deduction will not work. Checking your PAN is on file takes a minute and is worth doing before April each year.

Aadhaar updates

If the address on your Aadhaar is itself out of date, fix that first — post offices provide Aadhaar services, and our guide to updating your Aadhaar address at a post office covers the process. Updating Aadhaar first means one document then satisfies both identity and address for your KYC refresh.
