The India Post Franchise Scheme is regularly described online as a low-cost way to "open your own post office". That framing is misleading in one important respect, so it is worth stating plainly at the top: a franchisee books business, it does not deliver mail, and it is not a departmental post office. Understanding what the model actually is makes the rest of it clear.

What the scheme is for

India Post cannot justify a full departmental office everywhere demand exists โ€” a new township, a large campus, a market area already served at a distance. The franchise model fills that gap using someone else's premises and staff, while the sorting and delivery network stays with the department.

What a franchise outlet can typically do

  • Book Speed Post and Registered articles
  • Book money orders
  • Sell postage stamps and postal stationery
  • Sell retail services India Post offers through the counter

And what it does not do: deliver mail, operate as a departmental office, or generally provide the savings bank services people associate with a post office.

Eligibility in outline

  • A minimum age and a minimum education qualification apply.
  • Suitable premises are required for an outlet.
  • A close relative employed in the same postal division is normally a disqualification, to avoid conflict of interest.
  • A security deposit is taken, and a formal agreement, or memorandum of understanding, is signed with the division.

⚠️ Check the current figure: The minimum age, education requirement, security deposit amount and commission rates are set in the scheme notification and revised from time to time, and the deposit differs between the outlet and agent models. Get the current figures from the divisional office issuing the notification, or from indiapost.gov.in, before committing money.

How to apply

  1. Watch for the notification. Franchises are advertised by the divisional office for specific locations, not opened on demand anywhere you like.
  2. Obtain the application form from the divisional office or the notification.
  3. Submit with documents โ€” identity, address, education certificate and premises details.
  4. Selection is made by the divisional head, taking the location and the applicant's suitability into account.
  5. Sign the agreement and pay the security deposit.
  6. Training and equipment follow, after which the counter opens.

Judging the economics honestly

Income is commission on volume booked, so the location decides the outcome. Before applying, work out realistically how many articles a week the area will generate, remember that the delivery side earns you nothing, and treat any "guaranteed monthly income" claim you read elsewhere with suspicion โ€” India Post does not guarantee franchise earnings.
